The tragic division of Korea comes to life in the broken bond of two brothers. The conflict, confrontation and reunion of these brothers symbolize the reality of national division and hope of reunification.
Two brothers pass time together drawing pictures in a field. Gazing at the dandelions, they vow to never forsake their bond as brothers. Soon thereafter, the field is sectioned off into two by the ropes of a surveyor under the false premise of “survey practice.”
The brothers pay no mind and begin jumping rope. However, quarrels ensue over trivial matters. Both brothers stubbornly grasping at the false entitlement derived from the surveyor’s “boundaries,” they build a wall.
The wall keeps them divided. This physical separation causes a great chasm in their bond as brothers. The rift created by the surveyor’s lies causes them to drift further and further apart. Ultimately, their bond proves unbreakable. Happening across the dandelion flowers in the field reawakens happy, peaceful memories. They will destroy the wall.
Brothers is symbolic of the current division between the two Koreas, and the hope of reunification that can’t be erased. This parable illustrates the imperatives of brotherhood and recovering unity. Though driven apart by the lies of the surveyor, the inherent commitment of a shared history is unbreakable.
