Cantabile
Beautiful lighting adorns a dreamy dance…
Illuminated, the stage is set...
By passing memory files of the mind, this dance is automatic, the movements, unconscious, relying only on the imprint scripted in the fibers of the body.
The dancers sing a hymn in movement about the pure days of the past gone by.
* Cantabile: An Italian word describing the style of playing music slowly and freely, as if “to seem like singing.”
-The body moves instinctively in a dance that tells of a pure and innocent past.
I remember humming songs, outlandish songs, molded from pure imagination. Those songs were filled with happiness, anxiety and dreams of that time. When did my free spirit lose its voice?
Time passed...
A younger version of myself drifted into dreams often; I was a hopeful child. As I grew, I acquired more and more responsibility learning how difficult it is going through this life. In meeting these challenges, I’ve developed faith: faith in myself, faith in the world, faith in existence. Faith has made me less scared of the uncertainties in life; I am a better person for this. I’ve grown to value the company of others; at times, my efforts to maintain it broaches on obsession. Therein lies another lesson: learning to let go. All of these experiences culminate into the whole of me.
I still long for the purity that has evaporated with time. I dance in tribute to its memory. Along with Yeunbunhong Theatre Group, let’s pause convention, routine, and stress of “the everyday” . . . and return to innocence, an innocence that frees us to believe that a dish would run away with a spoon .
