From the tales of Korean mythology comes Lullaby: the story of the bond shared through love and sacrifice between a mother and a son. Told through vivid colors, traditional symbols and shadow play, this family-friendly show gives a new way of understanding “Tiger Moms”!

<Lullaby> is a work of family theater, adapted from the Korean traditional fairy tale, the Myth of Dangun.
Recently, the phrase “Tiger Mom” has come entered the common vernacular. Referring to the fierce role of the mother in traditional Asian homes, they are defined by the intensity and pressure put upon their children to achieve. <Lullaby> draws upon the Korean traditional stories, the Myth of Dangun and, the Sun and the Moon and uses a traditional form of Korean shadow play to tell its tale. Using the symbolism of tiger, this show aims to change the negative stereotype of “Tiger Moms” and introduce a new way of understanding maternal instinct.

Synopsis

A boy’s dream is flooded with images from Taoist worship along with one of a tiger. The moment the tiger tries to prey on him, he snaps awakes. He awaits his mother’s return from work, but she doesn’t come back. The boy is happy at the prospect of his mother coming home, but suddenly, a goblin appears and tells the boy, “This is not your mother, but a tiger that wants to eat you.” Soon after, the tiger begins to tell the boy its story of living in a cave for 300 days just eating garlic and mugwort. The boy falls asleep to the tiger woman’s lullaby and she tries to eat the sleeping boy, but a bear woman (Ungnyeo) and her son (Hwanung), show up to save his life and tell him an old sorrowful story.
