Dance and Music of Quanzhou Wenling Southern Art which is premiered in Korea. 


The Introduction 

(1)Rice Glue Ball Custom

The night of the 15th of the first lunar month is a traditional Chinese holiday. It is the jolliest day each year in Quanzhou. When the curtain of night is drawing down and gorgeous lights are turning up, beautiful festive lanterns are hanging up in front of each family’s gate. Colorfully dressed up folk street performers make the ancient city exceptionally fascinating. Women elegantly roll up rice dumpling at home for the celebration of this festival. What a touching folk picture scroll is in front of us!

(2)The Deep Passion of HuiAn Women

HuiAn Women of Quanzhou is a very special group of people. They are industrious and plain, having a unique custom and costume of their own. Their attractive costumes, with strong local characteristics, enjoy a wide-spread reputation.
The folk song and dance “The Deep Passion of HuiAn Women” not only showcases the beauty of their raiment, but also expresses their yearning for their relatives in Taiwan and a strong anticipation for the reunion.

(3)The Serene Charm of Fragrant Tea

Anxi country of Quanzhou city is the hometown of oolong tea. The famous tea, “TieGuanYin”, has its fragrance enjoyed by people all around the world. Over thousands of years, the producing technique of “TieGuanYin” has passed down from generation to generation, with continuous improvements.
The sweet and mellow taste of “TieGuanYin” is a result of the hard work of Tea-picking Women through the dexterity of their hands. This dance is a vivid depiction of the delicate working life scene of Tea-picking Women.

(4)Wenling Persian Women

As early as in the Song and Yuan Dynasties (960-1368), Quanzhou shared the same reputation with the port of Alexander in Egypt and is known as the big port in the East. “The rising sea brought merchants from hundreds of countries, the city street flourished with pedestrians from five continents”, as it was recorded by historical books.
Nowadays, there are still descendants of Persian people living in Quanzhou whose ancestry could be traced back to the overseas merchants over one thousand years ago. This dance is a eulogy from the offspring to their new hometown Quanzhou, the city that emits extraordinary splendor and brightness!

(5)Rollicking The Spring with Vehicle Drum

Hundreds of years ago, Vehicle Drum was brought to Quanzhou from the central plains of China. It has gradually become a local custom over the years that all women after their marriage need to study how to hit the drum. The vigorous and firm sound of the Vehicle Drum rippling in the ears, showing the Southern Fujian Women’s love of life and their aspiration for a beautiful future.

(6)Hastening the Spring with South Drum

South Drum’s Feet-pressing skill is regarded as a unique skill to be found in percussion instrument playing. The drummers produce various timbre through the movement of their heels on the drum and elaborate control of the pressing strength,which is a real fascination. The euphonious sound of the drum brings us the melody of Spring, while fairy girls dance their tripping steps in the Spring light.

(7)Fragranceof Yellow Jasmine

There lives in the Eastern coast of Quanzhou city a group of XunPu Women, beautiful and kindhearted, they are prudent and honest in nature, wearing beautiful costumes and headdresses, full of ocean culture features. Their raven hair pinned with fragrant Yellow Jasmine flowers, which were brought to Quanzhou in ancient times from the Arabian countries. The flower now sets their roots in the city, and became a symbol of peace and a happy life.

(8)Melody of The Song Spreading All Over

A vigorous pop song singing in “Minnanhua” - the local dialect in the South Fujian Province. The song helps people to have a relaxed mood in enjoying the beauty of life.

(9) A paean of Busan 

Quanzhou Wenling Southern Art

Quanzhou city, an ancient coastal city in Fujian Province, South-east of China, is among the first cities being proclaimed by the State Department as a famous historical and cultural city of China. It has been widely praised as “The Seaside Town of Zou and Lu”, Zou means the hometown of Mencius, Lu means the hometown of Confucius – the two ancient philosophers of China. From this high praise, one can easily sense what cultural prosperity Quanzhou enjoys. The vicissitude of history has left Quanzhou with not only splendid natural beauty, rich historical sites, but also cultural heritage such as folk customs and theatre art gems. 

In order to preserve the rich cultural heritage, Wenling Women’s South Art Workshop, a dance group composed of only female dancers, was setup in 2004 under the sponsorship of Licheng District Government of the city. It aims at keeping alive their traditional folk-custom arts, by feasting the audience with beautiful dances that depicting the diversified charms of the ancient XunPu Women, HuiAn Women, and Tea-picking Women living in their localities. It also tries to show the audience some traditional performing techniques that is found in the Southern Theatre, such as the Feet-pressing Drum, the music of Southern Fujian ballads, even some Persian dances that were brought to Quanzhou in its ancient times.
First premiered to the public on Dec. 2004, the elegance and delicacy of their dance instantly won great recognition from their audience. It is not only their beauty that is appreciated, but also the essence of their cultural contents and unique local characteristics that are being eternally cherished. Coverage and reports by such media giants as China Central Television, Singapore TV, Hong Kong Takungpao, etc., has enhanced the reputation of the dance group far and wide.
Within one year, the dance group was invited to perform in Hong Kong three times, and numerous tours to other cities in China as well. Invitations also come from some South-eastern Asian Countries, such as Singapore and Philippines.They are going to be first introduced to Korea through BIPAF this year.
