<Master Class> is a workshop program of 21st BIPAF, with a focus on "Commedia dell'arte".

The program is a workshop for artists and students majoring in performing arts, including actors, directors, and performers, aimed at exploring original approaches to Commedia dell'Arte with director Riccardo Pippa and actor Sandro Pivotti.

Learn all about masks with Riccardo Pippa and Cecilia Campani from Teatro dei Gordi, renowned for expanding and evolving Italy's Commedia dell'arte tradition. Additionally, we will prepare a 10-minute presentation performance by innovatively combining modern theater and Commedia dell'arte, using masks to represent the characters, archetypes, and situations in the masks.

Details
  • Introduction of different types of masks: neutral masks, traditional Commedia dell'Arte masks, larval masks, fake noses, and contemporary papier-mâché masks.
  • Training focused on five fundamental aspects of working with masks: breath, gaze, essentiality, reaction time, and the pleasure of mistakes. This practice will allow a gradual, organic, and natural approach to acting with the mask.
  • Improvisations with different masks to explore their physicality, rhythm, and worldview, allowing each participant to discover a personal way to bring a character to life.
  • Group improvisations to investigate possible relationships between masks of the same type, between masks of different types, and between actors with and without masks.
  • Creation of small original scenes.
※ The contents of the workshop can be done fluidly depending on the situation.
