Returning with Haboob, MJB theater builds upon the memory of Drilling (2024).
Between a matryoshka doll and an Arizona cactus stands “I.”
Youngwon, who grew up amid the IMF crisis and the absence of her father, lives with the belief that happiness is not meant for her.
In a life infused with comparison, competition, superiority, and inferiority,
she has closed herself layer by layer, like a matryoshka doll.
Then she heads toward the endless Arizona desert,
where the sun burns relentlessly.
Confronted by the Arizona cactus that grows up to 21 meters tall on barren land,
Youngwon faces her own emotions and choices for the first time.
The stage imagery, set against the vast desert, reveals a figure once trapped in a narrow psychological space,
and the audience witnesses the moment Youngwon breaks free from repression
and chooses her own direction.
Between the matryoshka and the Arizona cactus,
where will “I” finally head?

MJB theater is a creative collective working under the slogan, “We create theatre like a threshold.”
A threshold is both a boundary and a passage—dividing inside and outside, before and after, while connecting two different spaces. With a single step across it, the world surrounding a person can completely change.
The company believes that theatre holds the power to transform a person’s life. By placing the threshold of theatre before someone who has remained inside, it seeks to open the door to another world beyond.
Through fast-paced rhythms and energetic movement, MJB theater explores questions that cut across its era, creating performances where reflection and enjoyment coexist.
Its goal is for the afterimage of the stage to linger in the audience’s mind, leading to everyday contemplation and tangible change.
By presenting compelling themes and striking visuals, the company lowers the barriers to theatre and creates works that resonate across generations.
MJB theater continuously asks, through art, what is truly essential to our lives.
