Where does power begin?

Is evil born, or is it made?

And how much of him do we recognize in ourselves?

Richard 3. The Man is a theatrical journey deep into the inner world of one of Shakespeare’s most captivating and dangerous characters. Tracing the intersection of psychology, desire, history, and fiction, the performance invites us to encounter Richard not as a monster, but as a human being.

Through monologues, soliloquies, and direct engagement with the audience, Richard constantly shifts his face. He wields language as a weapon, manipulates those around him, and justifies every action in pursuit of his goal. What emerges is not merely the cruelty of one man, but a haunting question: how does power transform a human being?

Rather than recreating the past, the production uses Shakespeare’s language and historical traces as a point of departure, unfolding an experimental stage that moves between the seduction of power, the allure of evil, and the fragile boundary between reality and theatre.

Richard 3. The Man is a compelling theatrical experience that illuminates the darker desires of humanity through the enduring power of storytelling.

“Tony Bulandra” Theatre is a dynamic repertory theatre that presents approximately nine new productions each year. It finds its raison d’être in the “need for beauty” and in the desire to share that beauty with its audiences—an aesthetic and artistic beauty that transcends all human categories and has been handed down since antiquity.

The theatre functions as a laboratory where the secular is transformed into the sacred, and where contemporary directing approaches elevate existence beyond itself. Renowned directors from Romania and abroad reinterpret works belonging to the world theatrical canon, continually expanding the essence and possibilities of theatre.

“Tony Bulandra” Theatre embraces past, present, and future at once. Leaving traces within the flow of time, it persistently seeks to (re)discover the path that leads toward the soul. Since its founding on January 30, 2002, it has consistently participated in national and international theatre festivals with a wide range of productions.

The theatre is also the organizer of the international performing arts festival “Babel.” Now in its 14th edition, the festival annually invites outstanding artists from around the world, creating a space for meaningful artistic encounters and exchange.
