This show is crosses painting with the medium of theatre. During each performance, seven different scenes are painted on Korean traditional papers which then become the background for each scene. Each painting is accompanied by shadow puppets and objects that trigger one’s imagination. With Korean traditional paintings, puppets, traditional music and sound effects, this original puppet play gives the audience the feeling of reading a lyrical picture book and helps to expand their creativity.
Synopsis
Long ago, a father and his two sons, Sangoryi and BiTalyi, lived in Gangwon-do district. Upon his death, his sons uncover his will. It reads: “If I passed away, there is a pond near the hill. At 12 o'clock, the water in the pond suddenly dries, revealing stairs to the bottom where a stoneware jar can be found.”It is the father’s final request to be buried here but not without giving heed: it is critical to do so in a timely manner. The pond refills leading to a watery grave for the sons if they have not escaped in time. BiTalyi fulfills his father’s request but Sangoryi does not. The brothers drift apart and we are left wondering what is to become of Sangoryi? <Climb a Willow to the Palace of Sea King>is story of brotherly love and filial piety.
Kkumdongi Puppet Theater
‘Kkumdongi Puppet Theater’ was founded in 1996 and has been running many repertories and art programs. They focus on creating original stories as well as dramatizing traditional Korean folk tales from the Kang-Won region, also adopting international stories into Korean.
In 2008, <Toad, Toad, Gold Toad> was selected to perform at the DreamArt Children's Theater Festival. In 2009, <Three Stories> was selected as a part of the Underprivileged Regions Cultural Program run by Art Council Korea among 30 other theatre companies. In 2010, <Toad, Toad, Gold Toad> performed in 10 different cities in Korea under the same program.<Becoming a Real Thumbelina>, an adaptation of Andersen's Thumbelina, received great reviews from critics for its fresh ideas and entertainment. It was supported by the Art Council Korea.
