Shinjuku Ryozanpaku is back! Director Kim Sujin, who calls himself a bridge between Korea and Japan, is being recognized not only from both countries but also from all over the world for his distinctive style. This year, he visits BIPAF with a typical classic <Macbeth> which holds the epic of dark lust and tragic destiny of human.
The reason why Kim Sujin chose <Macbeth> may have a thread of connection between the reason why BIPAF had chosen to introduce classic theater. That is Shakespeare’s modernity, discovered through a question toward ourselves – why should a work written ‘then, and there’be introduced to the stage of ‘now, and here’? Besides, the grave prophecy of three witches from several centuries before still brings deep appreciation even today, in 2018. Like this, we can discover theater’s ‘synchronism’through <Macbeth> of Shinjuku Ryozanpaku, by countless questions asked regardless of the period.

Kim Sujin, a third-generation Korean Japanese, establishes his own identity as a ‘man of theater’, neither Korean nor Japanese. Shinjuku Ryozanpaku, a company centered around director Kim, is named after the name of city ‘Shinjuku’where their master Gara Juro‘s theater existed, and a place ’Ryozanpaku’which appears in a classic <Su Ho Jeon>. The company, signifying a combination of Shinjuku, downtown in Tokyo and Ryozanpaku, a utopian place of folks, pursues a theater against the opaque reality through fantasy of play.
