Woyzeck is the story of man's ageless working class struggle and desperation for money. It is about the weakness of the human condition which results in folly and jealousy. The playhas been created and recreated countless times in different styles and languages around the world since it was first written.

Based on the true story of Johann Christian Woyzeck a poor German man, it is a working class tragedy. In real life Woyzeck was publicly beheaded for murdering the woman he was living with in a fit of jealousy. In the play Woyzeck is forced to work for the army in his desperation for financial income. His work begins with menial labor but soon the army is performing medical experiments on him. His mental state decreases and he becomes paranoid and jealous.

The play was only partially completed by Georg Buchner in 1837 at the time of his death, therefore it is widely open to adaptation perhaps one of the reasons for its great popularity. Among famous productions of it have been a Werner Herzog movie and an American theater musical with a soundtrack written by Tom Waits. The Tom Waits album Blood Money was made for Woyzeck.

Woyzeck will be performed at the Busan Citizen’s Hall, Small Hall on Sunday May 2nd and Monday, May 3rd. Tickets are 15,000 won for adults and 10,000 won for students. While the scenes are self evident, be aware this version is entirely in Korean.
